Bachelor Pads

Mention the words “bachelor pad” in conversation and you’ll likely conjure up images of twenty-something guys living a swinging lifestyle which, fun as it may be, has left them with a sink of dirty dishes and a hamper full of dirty clothes. The term “bachelor pad” generally refers to a house or an apartment in which a single man lives or where single men room together. This is not to be confused with a similar term, “bachelor apartment”, also sometimes called and “efficiency” apartment, because it is usually one large room that serves as sleeping quarters, living room and kitchen.

Since many young men are not able to afford their own places, the concept and the myth of the bachelor pad brings with it a sense of status and luxury, although actually living in one of these settings may be far less captivating than the imagination makes it seem. Generally speaking, it’s the word “pad” added to the word “bachelor” that makes the idea of it so appealing. That tiny word speaks volumes, as it alludes to membership in a world of sexual freedom and a “do-as-I-please” lifestyle. Think James Bond, without all the toys.

Many bachelor pads are thought to be dirty, messy and smelly, like the people who inhabit them. Dried food on unwashed plates, clothes worn in last week’s pick up game piled in corners, sour milk in the fridge. They are considered as the site of wild parties where unbridled passion often takes place. But this is not true for all bachelors, because not all men enjoy living in a slovenly state or carrying on with sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. Due to financial reasons, friendship or the desire to live in a place better than one they could afford on their own, men often choose to share the expenses of living together, and they do not always make a mess of things.

Depending on your age and TV watching habits, you may remember the most famous of all bachelors, The Odd Couple. These two poor gents, both products of failed relationships, found them thrown together by necessity, doing their best to live in a bachelor pad, while ignoring the truly irritating habits they brought with them. One was very neat and fussy, and the other was, predictably, dirty and messy. Of course, that’s TV, not reality. Bottom line, bachelor pads really are great for bachelors.
