Types of Flooring

There are many types of flooring and your best options are going to be based on materials for the level of durability that you require, in addition to looks and cost. In the past the people that have been willing to pay more for hard wood flooring are now choosing certain kinds of wood-like and wood-containing materials for some applications, such as decks. These manmade materials are generally much more durable, yet can be painted or otherwise treated like wood flooring.

Wood flooring is a general term for any number of types of flooring materials that are made from wood. Another term for wood flooring is parquetry. Though parquetry refers to a mosaic of wood used for ornamental flooring, this term is fitting for all wood flooring, as all wood flooring is made up of smaller pieces that fit together in some uniform way.

Laminate wood flooring is typically the most affordable kind of flooring. This material is made of a faux-wood image that is applied to a cheap base material, such as particle board or plywood. Then a clear protective layer is placed on top of everything. The main disadvantage to laminate flooring is its likeliness to chip. Also, this material cannot be repaired, and must be entirely replaced in nearly every set of damage circumstances.

Slate flooring is easier to maintain than other natural stone surfaces. I learned while doing research about slate flooring that over the years craftsmen have been using slate for high traffic areas and also so exterior walls. It seems to be one of those stones that looks only cleaner and more perfect with age as it is polished by foot traffic and exposure to the elements.

There is a wide variety of vinyl types of flooring on the market today. There are also a lot of techniques used to install them. Vinyl flooring is made by pressing various things like ground-up cork and wood dust, along with coloring agents into a binding material that is usually either resin or linseed oil.
